Irlam is a suburb of the city of Salford situated between the Manchester Ship Canal on the southern boundary and the expanse of Chat Moss on the northern boundary. The district has a rich farming and industrial heritage and offers a fine blend of urban and close rural environment. There are defined business and industrial parks and a large number of local shops and small businesses. The views in this areas are stunning and provide a tranquil setting for walking. Steel manufacture was a major source of employment in Irlam for a large part of the 20th century. The Partington Steel and Iron Company opened the first steelworks in Irlam in 1910.
Whatever your faith, there are lots of places of worship across the district including Church of England, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Community and Congregational. Irlam has numerous pubs and places to eat alongside a wide range of activities for all ages. The area has some of the most beautiful parks in the city. Princes Park, Irlam is the location for the largest two day festival in Salford.
Irlam F.C. is a semi-professional football club that plays in the North West Counties League and has its ground in Silver Street. There are two junior football teams in the area, one of them being Irlam Vale F.C. Irlam Hornets Rugby League Club is a reformed rugby league club. Irlam Cricket Club plays in the Greater Manchester Cricket League, and Fit City is a leisure centre, with a swimming pool and fitness gym.
