Leigh is a town situated to the North-West of Chat Moss. Historically it was a part of Lancashire, however when the three townships of Pennington, Westleigh and Bedford came together in 1875 Leigh became the official name for the town. The first town hall was built on King Street however, in 1907 was replaced by the current building. In the 20th century Leigh was known to exploit the underlying coal measures more so when the town was connected to the canals and railways. The history and legacy of Leigh's industrial past can be seen in the remaining red brick mills.
A big landmark in Leigh is the red sandstone parish church with its magnificent structures, also if shopping is your thing there is Leigh Town Hall known for it's many shops also spread across Market Street. Get a sense for the town's unique architecture spread across many town centre buildings such as The Bear's Head public house where gables and terracotta dressings can be seen. Local architect J.C. Prestwich designed the War Memorial situated at the junction of Church Street and Silk Street which is also a Grade II listed structure.
Leigh has a professional rugby league team called Leigh Centurions whose most memorable moment was the defeat of Leeds in 1971 beating them 24-7 in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium. Leigh has several amateur clubs including Leigh East and Leigh Miners Rangers. The town is also known for it's semi professional football team- Leigh Genesis. However, the most successful amateur club is Leigh Athletic which currently plays in the Manchester Football League.
A popular site in Leigh is Pennington Flash Local Nature Reserve which is a country park home to a diverse group of mammals, birds and insects. This site gives wildlife a place to live and survive with its beautiful lakes and land. Another place close to that of nature would be Lilford Park, a beautiful place for a stroll or a bike ride. Leigh also holds Turnpike Gallery which contains thought provoking exhibitions which make an impression on people of all ages and backgrounds, it is very relevant to Leigh and its heritage.
