Chorley is a Market Town. The centre is a vibrant and exciting place to live and visit, With some of the most beautiful countryside in the region, a thriving town center, beautiful canals, parks and historic halls, Chorley is the perfect destination for a great day out. The market town also hosts a range of exciting events throughout the year for locals and visitors including the Chorley Grand Prix, Chorley Live and its very own literature festival. There are also some great places to go if you fancy cycling, walking or exploring the great outdoors and the beautiful canals.
Chorley's historic markets date back to 1498 and are buzzing five days a week, offering a range of varied products from local producers. Browse the specialist markets for handmade gifts and crafts, delicious local foods and produce or even stop for a pint at the small real ale bar. Tuesday is the most popular day for Chorley markets, with more than one hundred and fifty stalls occupying the outdoor Flat Iron Market. There is also the smaller Chorley covered market, which can be found in the heart of the town. Both markets are situated in the centre of Chorley and have superb local transport links and plenty of parking.
The Edwardian Chorley Little Theatre has become a thriving arts venue for the town showing a selection of film screenings, dramas, comedies and programmes of music. The theatre has a regularly vibrant ‘what's on' schedule all year round including varied touring comedians, music events with local bands and performances from the award-winning Chorley Youth Theatre. Chorley Little Theatre can be found in the heart of town and will make for a perfectly entertaining night out.
Astley Hall is a historic house built around an Elizabethan courtyard and some of the most picturesque surroundings and gardens Lancashire has to offer. You can delve into the hall's culturally rich museum and art gallery or take a stroll around the scenic Astley Park which has its own historic woodland, stunning lake and a fully renovated Victorian walled garden. Part of the garden is also home to a community food growing project where they grow their own fruits, vegetables and herbs, all of which can be sampled in the hall's very own Café Ambio. Astley Hall is open from April to December on weekends and also hosts some spectacular seasonal events.
2015 saw Chorley host their first ever flower show and it was a raging and award-winning success, so much so that is was back again for another year in 2016. The show is packed full of family fun, stunning horticultural displays and talks and demonstrations from celebrity guests and experts in the flowering world. You can also take a look around the wide variety of trade stands on offer at the flower show. With the show in its early days it is guaranteed to grow bigger and better each year and will be a highlight for the summer season.
Chorley is home to the semi professional football team, Chorley F.C., known as the Magpies due to their black and white strip. The town and surrounding boroughs boast a number of cricket clubs, with two teams taking the town's name. Chorley Cricket Club and Chorley St James Cricket Club. The town is home to the Chorley Buccaneers American Football Club. Chorley is home to track cyclists including Olympic Gold Medal winners Jason Queally and Bradley Wiggins, and Paralympic silver medallist Rik Waddon. Chorley is also the hometown of Paralympic gold medallist Natalie Jones.
