Frodsham is a market town, Civil Parish and electoral ward in the unitary authority of Chester West, Chester and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. In the medieval times Frodsham was an important borough and port belonging to the Earls of Chester. St Laurence's the Parish Church still exhibits evidence of a building present in the 12th century in its nave and is referenced in Doomsday Book. Development in the town's shops and premises with alcohol licences is evident through the recent opening or modernisation of contemporary-style bar/restaurants, take-away food shops and public houses, and in the continued presence of small, specialised, businesses operating from town-centre shops.
The town is of Saxon origin, it's 11th century church is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Frodsham was an important manor of the medieval Earls of Chester and was created a borough in the early 13th century. The mouth of the River Weaver, where it joins the Mersey, made Frodsham into a significant port for the coasting trade, particularly for the export of Cheshire salt brought down the river from Northwich and Nantwich.
Frodsham has a hill overlooking the Mersey estuary, which is popular with dog walkers and naturalists. Frodsham Hill, overlooking Frodsham and the Liverpool skyline, is a large sandstone hill, home to many farms, prestige homes and the Mersey View nightclub and Forest Hills Hotel. Before the construction of the hotel and nightclub, famously hosting one of the Beatles' first appearances, the site was home to a very large helter skelter. The Frodsham Caves are found in the sandstone foundations of Frodsham Hill.
The original Sandstone Trail officially opened in 1974. Starting out from outside the Devonshire Bakery and stretching over 11 miles (5-6 hours approx), follow the ridge of sandstone that rises dramatically from the Cheshire plain – the perfect antidote to some doughy gluttony. Follow the footsteps of Frodsham's 17th-century residents by taking the Blue Plaque Trail of historical signs, bursting with detail and complete with the town's symbol, the bumblebee. Fancy a drink or a bite to eat well according to the date on the lintel over the front door, the Bears Paw was constructed in 1632. It stands prominently on Main Street, and is an excellent people-watching spot on market days. Castle Park Arts Centre is set in beautiful parkland, and houses four galleries, craft units, coffee shop and workshop rooms. See and buy art and craft by Frodsham's local artists and then take a walk in the peaceful park.
A market is held here every Thursday along the streets causing traffic to be at a standstill with stalls full of trinkets and treasures. Manley Mere is a fun activity for all ages an adventure course that can be a good day out for everyone.
